memorable

The most memorable moment of my vacation would be hard to pick out. Was it standing on the scaffold site at the Tower of London? Drinking absinthe at a bar in Amsterdam? Taking a picture holding Kurt Cobain's guitar? My grandmother's 90th birthday cruise? The live sex show?

In fact, the thing that sticks out most in my mind is a comment made by my cousin Hanita. We were walking back to our hotel after the festival-- my sister, my American cousins, their friends, and me-- and we were laughing about something. My cousin turned to me and said, "You girls are always laughing. I think that's so great."

It struck me then, as it does now, how true that is. We spent two weeks together, seeing and doing so many things, and I don't think we ever stopped laughing.

Sure, we all had our cranky, whiny moments. At times we suffered through things we didn't want to do, and we missed out on things we wanted to do. We got stressed and annoyed and hungry and tired. It was all part of the experience.

But somehow, we always seemed to find something to laugh about. Usually one of us had done or said something stupid, fallen down or spilled something. Like when I asked a cute ice-cream salesman what his favorite pub was, and he said "Drink or eat?" in kind of a thick accent, and I said, "Okay! Where's that?"

Even in Hour 18 of our long, long, long trip home (bus, train, plane, customs, immigration, layover, delay due to lightning storm, plane...) when we were dying of exhaustion, my sister turned to me and said in the most perfect sarcastic voice, "Thanks again for booking these great tickets!" and we cracked up. It might have been hysterical laughter, but it was still laughter.

So of all the things I saw, and all the stories I have to tell, that's the first thing I wanted to say. When I remember our vacation, I'll remember A) walking until my legs felt like they were going to fall off, and B) laughing until my stomach hurt.

Everyone agrees that I look like I'm in a cheese commercial. Nobody should be this cheerful about cheese.

I was determined to hold the accordion for one of these pictures, even though the guy who posed with it right before us sneezed all over the keys. Thank god for antibacterial hand wipes. And in case you're confused, the two blonde girls are our cousins. The other two are their friends. My sister and I are the ones in the middle.

Here and here are larger versions of these pictures.

More to come!

365 days ago (give or take):

"The only thing I don't like about tutoring (other than fearing my car might burst into flames en route) is all the phone calls I have to make. I don't like talking on the phone very much, especially not to strangers. I'm not good on the phone. I'm nervous, my voice gets too loud, and I say all the wrong things. I feel like I've picked up the phone and dialed a magical code that has somehow turned me into my mother."

I've gotten a little more comfortable with the phone aspect, but not much.

what i'm reading:
I got The Crimson Petal and the White to read on the plane, and I am loving it! It's wonderfully written and engaging as hell-- and sexy! I also read Catch Me if You Can on the way home, and Kitchen Confidential on the way out, and an absolutely terrible book which isn't even good trashy fun, Diary of a Manhattan Call Girl. Great concept, total failure. It isn't even sexy AT ALL, and the main character is loathesome.

what i'm writing:
I had to buy Poet's Market and Best American Poetry as soon as I cam back to town. I feel rejuvenated and ready to write!

what i'm watching:
I hope my tape of The Amazing Race worked, so I can watch it later and find out who won! On the plane, I watched The Core which is SO BAD we laughed all the way through it.

anything:
I took 360 digital photos on this trip. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

the birds:
Phoebe was a little pissed off at me yesterday, but she's in a better mood today.

journal quote of the day:
I haven't caught up on my journals yet!

mood ring:
the mood ring is still on vacation

shakespeare says:
Now could thou and I rob the thieves and go merrily to London, it would be argument for a week, laughter for a month and a good jest for ever. (King Henry IV)

biking update:
miles: None
this year's mileage: 182.3
notes: I did a LOT of walking on the trip, but no biking!

escapades update:
I have to update my list! I did #51, #99, and #112. (I thought "try absinthe" was already on there but I couldn't find it. It is definitely escapade-worthy.)
